If you know me at all, you know that I'm passionate about helping people. There are specific issues that I'm especially interested in-- families, teen pregnancy, and poverty/homelessness. I feel called to work in these areas. Lately I've been taking steps in that direction and I just wanted to share.
Earlier this week I heard back from someone at Habitat for Humanity; I am going to be part of their Family Advocacy Committee. This committee basically works with families from the time they're accepted into the program until after they have moved in to their new home. They provide home-ownership classes and other support for families to help make their home lives more stable. I'm going to my first committee meeting in about a week and a half, and I'm really excited. I love what Habitat for Humanity does, but let's be honest-- I'm not too helpful when it comes to building a house. I can, however, work with the families, and I'm so excited about this opportunity.
Today I turned in my application for the master's program in counseling at Lee University. My specialty will be marriage and family therapy. Eventually I want to be in a position to work with pregnant teens, teen parents, single parents, families, marriages, etc. I'm planning to start the program this fall and should graduate in December 2010. I am really looking forward to starting this journey.
One more step that I haven't quite accomplished yet but plan to early next week- I will be picking up a volunteer application from New Hope Pregnancy Center. I hope to do client counseling there.
I'm very excited about taking these steps toward working in areas I'm passionate about. I can't imagine living my life without the goal of making a difference in the lives of other people. I'm ready to go after my dreams.
